“Majlis” is a unique concept from the Arab world. It’s a semi-public space within an urban neighborhood. In ancient times, they were exclusively used by men who gathered there to drink tea and discuss matters from the outside world. Today, they are used by men, women, and young people for various purposes. However, there’s still something from tradition that remains: a light and informal atmosphere, often improvised and temporary in terms of construction, materiality, and use.
This project is a Majlis situated along the UNESCO-protected “Pearling Path” in the old city of Muharraq, Bahrain. The intention is to create a temporary Majlis for this district that expresses new ideas about public life.
